Lye is the industry term for Potasium Hydroxide. This is similar to Sodium Hydroxide and both are strong bases. The reason they are effective for cleaning clogged drains is that they react chemically with common house hold plugs....usually hair, fatty food particles and organic materials. These materials are modified in the presence of these strong base materials and are generally softened such that the water in the sink or drain will allow them to flow easily into the drain system.

So, if you want to compare one drain cleaner from another, look at the concentration of Potasium Hydroxide or LYE, or the concentration of Sodium Hydroxide or Caustic.

In general, stronger is better. But stronger is also more dangerous. Both Lye and Caustic are not forgiving chemicals. A single drop in the eye will burn the eye lense and can cause loss of vision in the effected eye.

Use glovee, goggles or face shield and follow he directions. And be sure to cover the drain with a pan. Sometimes the chemical reaction generates heat that can cause the clogged material to erupt into the sink.

If used properly, they are safe and effective to use.

Since you mentioned that both the kitchen and bathroom drains are clogged, you probabley have a sewar line plugged. If this is the case can't add enough drain cleaner to clear the line. But it's worth trying one time.

Chances are, with two two drains plugged you have large diameter line plugged under or outside the house. These lines are usually a minimum of 4 inch diamter, and if they are plugged you will need a mechanical device to clean them. That means a plumber or a trip to the tool rental place. Lines this large can't be cleared with chemicals.

You can find drain cleaners at your local hard ware store! You can try cleaning the traps first before using the cleaners! A snake can do the job too! It will go far into it and you will know when you hit the clog! You might have built up grease and foor on the walls of your pipes causing the back up! If you bathroom and the kitchen are backing up I suggest the snake! The clog is probably where the two drain pipes connect! The snakes are inexpensive and can get the job done. I work at Lowes in the plumbing department for a 1 1/2 the link below will give you the basics! Good luck!!
