I have used chlorine and a pressure washer in the past to remove dirt and mildew from my shingles. Are there any other methods that are better and less harmful to the shingles?

Asphalt shingles are not meant to be cleaned. If you are having trouble with mildew and mold growing on them spray them with an anti-fungal spray. But it will come back....part of the problem is actually with your roof and attic. The warm air is creating moisture when it mixes with the outside air in the winter and vice versa in the summer (assuming you are living in a climate with seasonal changes although works the same if you are running A/C all year long) A ridge vent, vented soffit in the eaves or an attic fan will help regulate the air flow and help prevent this from happening. Also make sure your trees are trimmed back so that the limbs don't extend over the house creating too much shade.

I had Shingles for the first time a few weeks ago. I am normally in good health and haven't had any other health challenges before, so it came as a surprise.

Shingles is probably the most painful thing I have ever encountered. I went to the doctor, and he gave me some prescription drugs to take that was suposed to help, but didn't.

My wife found the Fast Shingles Cure ebook online and bought it for me, I am very lucky to have such a wonderful woman in my life. We followed the book, did what it said, and it delivered what it promised. Finally my Shingles rash is over... I feel truly blessed and thankful.

I recently put a new roof on my home and it looks great. I've never had the Shingles but do get the Shakes occasionally after a hard night of drinking. When I put the new roof on I hadn't had a drink in over two weeks. So Yes, I can put a roof on without Shingles or Shakes.

Unfortunately, I do not know what type fo shingles you haves.. wood or the other type... If the other type, just wash with a water hose but not high pressure.. IF IT DOES have mildew(I do not know why they would) then if you can get upon the house, mix up water and a Clorox mixture and just pour it on the areas where the mildew is.. Clorox will kill the mildew in no time.

I would think Clorox and a pressure washer would remove plenty of asphalt granules! That could limit the life of your roof!

Is your roof THAT moldy/mildwy? You must be in Seattle or somewhere that stays damp AND has no sunshine to dry it out!

ANNYWAY.... I'd suggest JoMax in a sprayer bottle. You mix it w/ soem clorox and water, and spray it on. Let it sit, then hose it off. If you time it right, you can spray it on right before a good rain, so no rinsing!

(Be aware: chlorine will break down any termite prevention chemical you have around your house; if you have probs w/ termites, you may not want to use chlorine)

And next time, maybe put a tad darker roof on? Or at least oen that is mildw-colored?! ;-)

We use a leaf blower to clean ours off, power washing is a little strong for shingles, then we apply a mixture of water and bleach about 50/50 as we have several limbs hanging over our roof. We do this every spring and also in the fall of the year.

String a copper wire along the ridge. Copper oxide will kill the mold and mildew over time.
