Ok, they really are macho men putting their lives at stake, more than I'd care to do. Through jungle and swamp, forest and desert, caves, they crawl and walk around actually looking for poisonous snakes in SHORTS and short sleeved shirts! —— I'd be wearing stainless steel carbon fiber CHAIN-MAIL top to bottom! But, oh, not them; oh no, they're tramping around swamps with bare feet, catching black adders bare-handed without even a stick.
What's up with these guys? Who do they think they are, Steve Erwin? Why do they do that? Are they crazy?

Most of those places with the really cool snakes are very hot areas to work in. They are also infested with all sorts of biting insects, ticks, scorpions and leeches. The options are to wear shorts that allow for easy spotting and removal of these critters or to wear long pants tucked into boots to keep the critters out. In wet conditions the long pants become very uncomfortable. Many people choose the shorts because of the heat.

They are trained professionals that has been wrangling most or all of their lives. Just like Steve Irwin. They know what to do and how to move around w/o provoking a deadly snake. And chain mail won't help you. A snakes fangs will just go around the links in the mesh to get to you the fangs are pointed at the ends you know. Like needles. Get a suit of armor.

Having caught my fair share of snakes, here is the deal:
Jeans are not protection from snakes. While you can buy 'snake chaps', they are heavy and very hot.
When searching for snakes, you spend 99% of your time walking, climbing, swatting bugs, bushwhacking, etc. Carrying a lot of junk or dressing up hot severely limits your range and effectiveness.
You learn to identify likely sites, and there are many ways to protect yourself other than armor. Snakes are wild, but not unpredictable.

Snakes can move so fast a bite feels like only a bump.
Faster to spot a bite.

Wouldnt shorts just attract snakes since the snake can mistake your one eyed snake for a possible breeding partner?
