The Everlasting

The gap that grows between our lives
The gap our parents never had
Stop those thoughts control your mind
Replace the things that you despise
Oh you're old I hear you say
It doesn't mean that I don't care
I don't believe in it anymore
Pathetic acts for a worthless cause

In the beginning when we were winning
When our smiles were genuine
In the beginning when we were winning
When our smiles were genuine

But now unforgiven the everlasting
Everlasting

The world is full of refugees
They're just like you and just like me
But as people we have a choice
To end the void with all its force
So don't forget or don't pretend
It's all the same now in the end
It was set in a different life
Destroys my days and haunts my nights?

In the beginning when we were winning
When our smiles were genuine
In the beginning when we were winning
When our smiles were genuine

But now unforgiving the everlasting
Everlasting

I think this poem is tracing the usual journey from the joy and promise of youth to old age. But it really doesn't have to be this way. If one is able to take control of his growth s/he can become active and dynamic by becoming creative in some field and retain that childlike curiosity and zest for living right to the end. It's possible and some have done it. It means getting interested in things and other people and becoming aware of the wholeness of everything. I can get this by writing plays and trying to construct situations which will make people laugh and feel love and see things that they have never seen before. For instance, I was watching the video musical of CATS many times and eventually I noticed a little dancer (5 ft i inch) who is often seen alongside the cat in all white. She had a strange, kittenish, childish way of dancing that sent me into a state of awe. And when she would sing I felt I was soaring into the cosmos. After watching her and absorbing this beauty I feel inspired and I want to go to the typewriter or computer and write!
She inspires me to see a vision and when I see that vision then I can write. If I can't see that vision, I can't write anything good. (By the way, her name is Veerle Casteleyn and she plays the role of JEMIMA in CATS.) So you must find what in nature or in art inspires you and absorb those vibrations over and over again until you are full of them and then you will begin to recapture again the spontaneity and joy of youth. The other side of the coin is that you must try to avoid down, dark, sick, morbid, bitchy, violent, hateful vibrations as if you take that stuff in it wll kill off your creative abilities. The other thing that is death to a creative person is boredom. Get away from boring people and situations as soon as you can and as fast as possible. Learn how to understand the whole picture, not just your side of it but theirs, too, and that kind of total understanding enables you to truly forgive, others and yourself. So this is how I retain my youthfulness. I'm an adult now but I still feel like I'm a young boy again. And I will die that way.

My opinion, Hannah, is that it is another way of describing the loss of innocence. Remember when as a child, laughter was so easy and pure? It was sheer delight to be a kid. Simple joy. When it's gone, it's over. Some people never get to have that...or a childhood for that matter. Good lyrics. I'd love to hear the song. Nana

IMHO they are talking about the loss of excitement and boredom of a relationship. Maybe the end of a marriage and it is really affecting him. They are also saying it is your responsibility to change it...it is sad...but thought provoking..

This song speaks of disillusionment. It could be about growing up, breaking up, getting sick of your job, or just a general sense of ennui. It speaks to the inevitable decline of just about everything.

I think it is about getting old and remembering the lost youth, and about regrets. It is very deep.
