I contacted an agent a/b a month ago. i wasnt expecting anything back. but an agent wrote me back personally, i was happy, does this mean i am a good writer?

It probably means that you have a good and interesting idea for your book and that you presented the idea well as long as this was a reputable agency. As a writer, when an editor personally writes me back, even though he may be declining the current submitted article, and invites me to submit again in the future, I know that he liked my style, just did not desire that particular article. I take it as a compliment.

Congrats that the agent wrote you back! But your question doesn't specify exactly what the agent wrote. Did he or she say they were interested in representing your book? Did they ask you to sign a contract, or just send a thank you for submitting it?

I would just be very careful if they ask YOU to pay them money before they work on your project. Agents get money AFTER the project sells, not in advance.
