Start > Run > type msconfig > Go to the start menu tab. Uncheck anything that you don't need to have running all the time;(especally ANYTHING from Adobe, because they take up lots of resources). Usually, programs place themselves on the start menu automatically upon installation, so your computer has to activate all of these at startup; then keep them running in the background. Turn off all programs that you don't want running all the time. Then hit OK and restart your computer. There will be a window that comes up when it is restarted indicating that it is starting in a custom mode. Uncheck the box that says "show at startup" and you're done.

Next, if you don't have these, go to download.com and download and install the free versions of Ad-aware SE Personal, Ewido Anti Spyware and Spybot Search & Destroy, then run them in whatever order you choose. Set them up to run automatically at least once a week.

Obviously, in this day and age you have antivirus I assume.

Last, open your Internet Explorer and to to Tools > Internet Options and choose Delete Files, check the box that says 'delete all offline content' and you're done.

Since you run so many resource sapping programs, the first thing I told you about the start menu is VERY important.

Hope that helps.

I bet you are using AOL if you are this is why your system is under attack AOL allows so many things to just infect a PC until it is slow as crap. Try using your restore disc to factory setting and do not use AOL anymore. Also you should have purchased a MAC you would not have these issues if you did.

you can never have the most up to date pc in this day and age. If YOU can work on it for right now, dont sweat it until you can really afford a new one again.
