If they have only said it once or twice - it is sometimes best to simply ignore it - not even giving eye contact. If they get a lot of attention when they say it, they'll probably say it more. If it's become part of his or her vocabulary, you can try saying "that isn't a word we use" then make sure you don't use it either. Give them another word instead - for eg., if they say "damn" you say "shucky darn" or something like that.

Tell the child that is not a good word - just like you taught him what not to touch in the living room. He'll keep it up for awhile but ignore it and the wonder of the word will go away when he doesn't get the desired reaction from you.
In my house it was the word 'ain't.' I can't stand that word and I would continually correct my son. After a couple of times I stopped reacting to the word and I haven't heard it in years (he's 9 now).

Tell them that it is a strogn word that deeply offends people, of course, in a simpilier wording, but still getting that idea across, it's nto necessarily a "bad" word, it is just a very strong word that offends many people, and you should show him/her that the word will make a lot of people upset.

Ask him where he heard the word. If he says he heard you use it, then you should admit you did something wrong and apologize.
Then both of you agree to help each other not say the word.

tell them it's a bad word, and that it isn't polite. If this doesn't work threaten to take something they like away from them.
