He has a lot of water retention in his whole body. He came home from the hospital yesterday, and they removed his picc line (a port to take blood, place IV, etc.) Tonight, the hole where it went into his arm has started leaking quite a bit of water. Is this normal? there is no no blood coming out, but the actual little hole looks slightly infected.

I called the nurse from his floor and she said it may be an infection, to go to the doctor. Since it is Sat. night and doesn't appear to be an emergency, I guess we can wait until tomorrow. There is no fever.

the symptoms and signs suggestive of infection would be redness, swelling, pus, pain, warmth and tenderness to touch. If you think these are present, you could start with calling er or the doctor who saw your husband. presence of fever and or chills would suggest going to the er right away, but seeing a doctor asap would be a good idea too, feel free to email me with any questions

If you think you might be leaking amniotic fluid, call your OB's office and schedule to go in to have it checked. Don't be nervous about asking, because you are not the first to have this happen and not know if it's amniotic fluid or urine. And you won't be the last. Thing here is (and I don't say this to scare you - just being honest), I was told that during pregnancy you shouldn't leak a noticeable amount of amniotic fluid. It's the stuff the unborn baby lives in. And they do need a certain amount for their health. On the other hand, the baby might be positioned such that he or she is sort of squeezing pee out of you. But, in this case, it really is best to call your Dr's office and talk with an advice nurse there or explain the situation to the scheduler and ask to come in as soon as you can so that it can be determined what is leaking and how much is leaking. And, again, don't feel nervous about asking. This is probably the first of many, many calls you'll make to a Dr on behalf of your child to "be on the safe side" as it'll happen when they are an infant, toddler, grade-schooler, pre-tee, tween, and teen. ... What I am saying is, looking for answers and advice comes with the territory of being a parent. Go make that call to schedule a time to find out what's what. Good luck.

I'm a nurse who works with PICC lines. Your husband may have an infection at the site. Wash the area with Antibacterial soap, dry well, apply neosporin and a bandaide and call the doctor's office on Monday and let him know. If the site gets painful, and very red, go to the emergency room this weekend and have them check it out.

Although it is Saturday you should be able to call your doctors office and get an emergency number to have your doctor paged. I would suggest doing this and explaining to him/her what is going on just to ease your mind and be sure there is no serious problem going on. It could be infected or if he is retaining alot of fluid it could be the fluid seeping out. I would call the doctor.

I would definitely have some one look at it. It should not leak, look red, swollen, puffy or have drainage. Call your dr or if that is not an option take him to the emergency room to have them look at it. If it is leaking then it he is not getting his medication. Take his temp also. If it is infected, he may have a slight fever.

This could be a very serious medical problem that should be presented to your husbands MD. Give them a call now. It may be that it is nothing, but they will probably want him to come in so that they can look at it. YOU sure don't want it to get infected.

Call your doctor right away or if you cant reach him take your husband to the emergency room. This sounds dangerous to me. Anyway it is best to check it out to be sure.

Please call the hospital unit where he had it removed and ask the nurses there. If they can't provide answers, call the Dr. and ask his answering service to page him. Please call one or both right now.
I'd check his temperature just to get a baseline and just in case the Dr. asks if he has a fever.
