The basic nature of ego is to expand, and tries in all ways.
Flattery creates an illusion of expansion of ego !

It is for our emotional well being that we need to pump the ego up to some extent. It's like a balloon though. Too much air and it explodes and too little it goes flat.

We all want to be liked, told we're doing a great job, and in our own minds, we're usually something much more than what we really are.
The flattery probably keeps us going at our seemingly boring jobs.
