How do you open a cork without a corkscrew?

Hold the bottle horizontal and hit the base hard with a rubber mallet. This will generate a nice pressure pulse in the wine that will push the cork out.

Besides using traditional methods to force the cork out try this if you are daring.

I saw this at a restaurant (DO NOT ATTEMPT UNLESS YOU ARE WILLING TO LOSE FINGERS)

Take a short sword and cut a fine line near the neck of the bottle a few times. Then while holding the bottle by the base point neck of bottle away and slide the sword fast along the body of the bottle toward the cut line made earlier. The glass will cleanly break at the line and completely remove the neck of the bottle. No cork dust in bottle if you do this. Also if done correctly no glass will fall into the wine either.

Very fancy. Very cool entertainment value.

In Europe they sell an odd opener, it fits on the top of the bottle, and has a cartridge in it. The gas goes in and produces positive pressure which pops the cork out of the bottle. No strains, no cracked cork pieces....

i assume you mean a corked bottle, probably of wine? You could use a knife and a fork, ive broken the top off before, either way you are probably gonna get some cork in the bottle, or glass.
