Symbolism more than anything else. The whole point of lethal injection is that it is supposedly neither cruel nor unusual. Though this person is a mudurer, this country is founded on the belief that everyone is equal... and we are big on humanitarian issues. During any other procedure, you would clean the needle and swab the area with disinfectant. To forgo this is to imply that the person to recieve the injection is less than human. While some may argue that someone who commited an act atrocious enough to be put to death does not deserve to be considered human, to imply that they are something less is against the founding beliefs of our society. So, while it is insignificant in reality, it could possibly carry a great deal of symbolic power...

I always wondered about that one. Maybe so that they can be sure when they use the body for testing that they know the weird serums are from the chemicals that caused the person to be evil enough to earn killing.

You forget about also swabbing the area with a disinfectant first.

Political Correctness, perhaps?

If it weren't such a serious issue, it would be laughable.
