When I took a photography course in college we were given the option of checking out a camera from the art department for a certain period of time. While it may be more convenient to have your own, if you are short on cash it might be a good idea just to ask your department to loan you one for each class/day/week/semester.

The requirement is that you already own a SLR Camera or you have access by borrowing someone elses camera.
YOU will need to talk to the instructor (or pick up the Syllabus sheet) which will tell you what cameras will be acceptable for the Photography Course. Most will say that they want a SLR Type -- and either the 35mm format (for which you will need to pay for your developing costs), or the Digital SLR (which you can shoot to your heart's content images -- thus increasing your odds of getting a higher class grade).
No matter what -- with the Digital SLR -- I would suggest you obtain the software used in the class and load it onto your personal laptop. My daughter took the College Course in Photography, and by downloading the Digital SLR Photos as she went along and took the images -- it was more of an immediate feedback, and helped in lessening the frustration factor when the instructor is looking for that 'perfect' shot -- because when you have them all stored on your laptop -- you can start your sort to choose some good candidates there on the laptop, and only transfer those that the instructor will have already culled through as well.

Yes, you'll definitely need to buy your own camera. However, it's best to wait until the first day of class so that your professor can give you the description of the kind of camera required for the course. It should be in the syllabus, but if you have a question, you can always e-mail the professor and he/she will get back to you on it. You can even print the specs and take it with you to the camera store.
Whatever you do, don't buy it at the bookstore on campus. They are ridiculously over priced. Also, when it comes to film, places like Walmart and Target are wonderful as they have low prices and a lot of choices. Good luck!

You will need to have your own camera, as well as flash, lenses, etc. With digital photography now, you will need to find out if you need a regular SLR, digital SLR or both, what kind of lenses, tripod, etc.

you'll need to buy your own. They can give you an idea of what to buy so talk to your prof before doing so if this is your first camara.
