First I would ask your parents for permission first. I think the American Red Cross has sessions. I don't know much more.

Well the first thing you want to do is get signed up for a CPR class. Then read a book on child safety. You also want to get a kit with a thermometer, band aids, q-tips and stuff like that. Also once you do that get a certified go ahead and get free business cards from vista print. Go on line also for some print out emergency contact cards for the parents to fill out. You want at least $15 - $20 per night. It depends on what you may have to do with the kid. If it is a situation where the child you watch is every evening like afterschool care then $20 a week is good enough. But if it is for a whole night where you have to spend the night or the child spends the night with you that is where the $20 per night is good. You will want to plan activities and establish rules as well. I will try to keep in touch with you so I can get you started ok (lalajay71)

take a Red Cross babysitters class at your park district. Learn CPR and the right way to care for babies and kids. Youwill become certified, and they can put you on a list of certified babysitters. Good luck!
Pay is between you and the parent, but no less than $3 per hour per child.
also - in my daughter's class they had to make a babysitter's box. She took a shoe box and decorated it. Then she filled it with a few of her own special/favorite toys from when she was little. At the end of the job, she would pack up the box and bring it home. Each week the little boy she baby sat for was so excited to see what she would bring.

If you have smaller brothers and sisters, i would start with that. If your parents or neighbors are going somewhere you should offer to "see about" any small children. You really don't need to take any classes. You just need patients and know what to do in any situations. You should start out with maybe $5.50/hr. and go up depending on the situation or time. Whether you have to provide a lunch or snack for them. good luck!

I recommend taking classes. They offer them through the community and some YMCA's. Most young sitters start with a few dollars an hour and gauge it from there
