Actually flies take off backwards (for real - no joke). You will be more successful in hitting them if you come at them from behind.

Flies sense an object coming towards it due to the air pressure being pushed ahead of the swatter, especially if it's a solid object. Based upon this knowledge, the inventor of the modern fly swatter put holes on a flyswatter to lessen the pressure. However, when it was invented, there was no name to it until one day while watching a baseball game, on the last inning, with the game tied, the last batter was ready to hit. Spectators where shouting "make it a fly ball" while other yells, "just swat the ball", and the game will be won. From it came the word "fly swatter".

Flies have compound eyes, like man insects do. These eyes are not good at picking up detail, but they are excellent for picking up movement. The slightest movement is enough to warn a fly that you are trying to hit it. The compound eyes also give it a wide range of vision, and since it has two eyes it has excellent depth perception.
According to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_fly
"Flies have a very highly-evolved evasion reaction which helps to ensure their survival. It is possible to confuse a fly's evasion system by swatting it with two objects simultaneously from different directions. The holes in a fly swatter minimize the air current which warns the fly of being hit, whilst reducing air resistance and increasing speed of the swat. This evasion reaction can also be used against the fly. Clapping your hands several inches above the fly will cause it to try to escape, usually into your just closing hands."
Flies also live on a faster time rate than we do. A fluorescent light blinks at a rate of about once per 1/60th of a second. Flies are able to see the separate flashes, which to us looks like a steady light. Which makes their short life spans a little longer to them: " The adults live from half a month to a month in the wild, or longer in benign laboratory conditions."
