I suppose nitrous oxide (laughing gas) would be nice - then everyone would be laughing and having a hell of a good time - all the way down.
On a more serious note, I can't think of any more safety devises that would be of use in the event of a plane crash.
Most crashes do not provide for the luxury of the time or altitude that would allow the passengers to parachute to safety - and, first time parachuters might well be better off if they just stayed in the plane.
A great safety idea, in this day and age, is to arm the pilots and have an armed and disguised Federal Marshall on board.

If a plane crashes, I doubt oxygen would do much good. :) I think there's a good scientific reason the oxygen is there, probably because of air pressure issues.
I think my favorite airplane story was Billy Connelly's. He said that they give every passenger these little flotation devices that double as pillows, and if the plane crashes, they advise everyone to sit on their flotation devices. This won't save you, but in two hundred years, when archaeologists dig up the bones from the mountaintop where the plane crashed, they'll think there used to be a body of water there. :)

More people die in car crashes than aircraft accidents. Oxygen and a first aid kit are enough.

Most aircraft fly at altitudes where the air is extremely cold.
You would freeze to death anyway.
