Is it cheaper to get kitchen cabinets/counter tops from a home improvment store or a store that specializes in that particular product?

Its actually cheaper to get cabinets that you have to "finish" yourselves. You can save half, or more off the price, if you do this.

But, if your not "comfortable" doing this, then you should have some one who has the work force to put the cabinets in. Lowes has independent contractors, and they guarantee the work, or, those independent contractors dont get to work! You complain, LOWES takes care of it, Pronto!!

I had a cousin, whos brother in law saved thousands by going as far as two and a half hours from home, to get his cabinets and he finished them and they turned out nice. Of course, he did it himself, so, he made out.

Its what your most comfortable with, and your skills.

I wish you well..

I have found that stores such as lowe's and home depot can be less expensive that dedicated cabinet/counter top stores. However, be aware the the prices the chains quote are very misleading. They typically list thier cabinets at X dollars a foot for a typical 10 by 10 kitchen. However, the actual price depends totally on the type of cabinet you buy...ie, corner cab with a 45 degree front, sliding shelves, solid wood vs veneer in the inside, particle board backs or plywood...etc..etc...etc....so be sure where ever you go to compare apples to apples. Make your choices first..then solicit prices from home centers and cabinet shops.

That is an excellent question. I have had Lowe's or Home Depot do the work.. The other companies do charge more... but IF.. and this you have to ask because different home depots and Lowe's work differently.. IF they(Lowe's) has installation capabilities(thru a private company of course as Lowe's does not do it due to law suits, etc).. then let them do it

I saved a lot on mine when I did it the first time and second time when I tore out part of the cabinets myself.... but some people might not like that.

Did you try IKEA? They have good prices. Anyway, I would go with big company unless you know somebody you trust. It's all about finding sombody you will good work with.

Prices - you can get over the phone if you know what to ask for. You might
want to go see what your gonna get for the cheapest price. You have to live
with it.
