I have never had a best answer so vote 4 me...I would say that a certain amount would be taken up by water , oil floats on water and under pressure the oil would be forced up and out first, I assume an amount of gas and empty space would also be present....This is just a common sense answer and should not be taken as fact....I am sure there are other factors that others may mention but at least I tried......(vote 4 me) :-)

WHile the well is being used, sometimes water is pumped into it to force out the oil. If nothing else, air will fill it. Or more water from underground.

Contemporary extraction techniques use either a gas or a liquid, usually water under pressure to help get the oil out of the ground.

the old "gushers" you see in movies where the oil comes shooting out on it;s own are rare, almost nonexistent these days.
