I saw the most different sunset tonight. (I am in Illinois). When I saw this sunset the sky was pink with blue rays coming from the middle of the sunset. It almost looked like a shadow of the sun with rays in the sky. I just wondered what it was.

Prismatic effect of the sunlight shining through some water vapor in the sky. Has a nice effect and almost hypnotic to watch.

I have seen a few sunsets like you describe and I agree they do look a little wierd. I believe it is due to clouds shadowing the orange rays, allowing the normal blue color of the sky to be revealed.
