I grew up in Homer, Alaska, and it is a beautiful town (population 3,500). However, it is a bit expensive to live in, and it's hard to find work there (unless you are in the health field - there's a shortage of doctors, nurses, and support personnel there). It's about 220 miles away from Anchorage, on the Kenai Peninsula.

Soldotna, Alaska is a nice sized town (aprox. 10,000) and it's easier to find work there. It's about 180 miles away from Anchorage, on the Kenai Peninsula. The weather is a bit colder than in Homer, but you are closer to Anchorage (which is a plus - only 180 miles from a decent mall!). It's a bit less scenic than Homer since it's more populated, but still beautiful. Kenai, Alaska is about 11 miles away from Soldotna, and is a bit smaller.

Eagle River is a great place to live. It's about 15 miles away from Anchorage (Anchorage's population is around 220,000) so you won't have a shortage of jobs, yet it's far enough away from the city to still have a nice atmosphere, and it's actually quiet at night (unlike Anchorage).

If you are looking to move further from the city, there's always Palmer (40 miles from Anchorage). Still in commuting distance, but it's a small town with a great atmosphere. Property is cheaper there (important if you want to purchase a house!). It's a beautiful place to live, too. Not as scenic as Homer, but still gorgeous (and on a clear day, you can see Denali, the highest mountain in North America).

If you want to move farther up north (much colder!) North Pole, Alaska is wonderful. It's about 20 miles away from Fairbanks (population about 100,000) and it's not as mountainous as the Anchorage area, but has an artic beauty all it's own. During Christmas, they really make a big deal out of the North Pole name!

As far as the cost of living, well, it's pretty expensive to live in Alaska. It's cheaper the closer you get to the big cities (Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau) and gets more expensive the farther out you go. In the small Bush communities, where there are no roads and groceries are flown or barged in, its exceedingly expensive.

Hope this helps!

Eagle River. A small community outside of Anchorage. I don't think it's relatively inexpensive, but everything is expensive in Alaska. At least there's no sales tax. I have heard it's a nice place to live from somebody living in Anchorage. I don't live in Alaska myself, but I've visited there.

I've played tennis in triple digit temperatures, and the older I get the less I like the cold. I'd do better in a town in the desert than in Central AK (but I'd rather be near the shore).
