I am a Joy Division fan above anything.
New Order have struggled for years to dump the miserable Mancunian image, something which Ian Curtis would have worked to his advantage, as he did in Joy Division
Also, Joy Division remain anonymous in terms of image. This was reinforced by a strong live emphasis and Ian Curtis' stage magnetism and image. New Order on the other hand have been much more CD orientated, and it is often commentated by fans that stage performances are weak and often sound forced.
I also find Ian Curtis' vocal performance much more natural- his voice and vocal persormance changes with time, early performances sounding rough, to the velvet tones of Love Will Tear Us Apart. This can be contrasted with Bernard Sumner's pop-like vocal style, which sounds distorted and forced when heard away from the instrumentals, even though he is a good singer.
I also find that the emotion of Joy Division pieces also attracts me more than the bizarre and sometimes puzzling lyrics of many New Order songs.
But I DO like both bands, I just prefer Joy Divison if forced to choose.
PS New Order as a group often admit they are indebted to their Joy Division past and to Ian Curtis as a singer for enabling them to express themselves in their music, and to do something they loved and love- play music.

New Order are the fantastic band that rose from the ashes of Joy Division when poor Ian Curtis killed himself. Following on from New Order Bernard Sumner got together with the ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Mar for a project group Electronic they also had Pet Shop Boys singer Neil Tennant on as guest vocals. All 3 of these groups are awesome and I couldn't choose between New Order and Joy Division.

Love will tear us apart will remain loads of peoples favourite for ever as will Blue Monday by New Order. If you have never heard it seek out Get the Message by Electronic for another awe inspiring track!

Joy division - they were different, exiting and relay out there. Ian Curtis was an unbelievable front man who wrote powerfull lyrics. New order are very good but a bit safe in comparison.

New Order. Joy Division is depressing and boring, plus the old mixes don't stand the test of time. Forget what Spin and Blender insist. I am too old to read those magazines anyway. Now that they put the Pussycat Dolls on the cover, I want to regress to the Spice Girls.
