For essays you need to read and analyze the information and then when you are away from the books try to recite or explain it. If you cant, go study some more. Learn the basic concepts, do not jam the information and work on a per day basis by learning little chunks at a time. Always make a list of vocabulary words that contain the substance of the lesson, that way it is easier for you to reconstruct and answer anything from scratch.

Form an opinion on something you're supposed to have learned in class and practice writing about it for a timed period at home.

Study OR read the chapters in your book at least once. Just one time can help. So many people don't really read it at all and they miss out on phrases that reappear on tests. You never know; maybe your mind will pull up some facts or pieces of pages for you during test time, if you have a visually oriented memory.

Figure out your learning style and you'll figure out the best ways for you to study. Myself, I'm a visual and kinesthetic learner, mostly.

Write concisely and technically. Do not use fluorid language. Stick to the point and do not stray from it. I suggest that you practice writing 5-Paragraph style essays. Let the middle 3 paragraphs explain each point at issue from your thesis statement. In your opening paragraph introduce the main issue AND briefly state your conclusion. In your closing paragraph restate your thesis, briefly touch on your application, and specify your conclusion.
