How many really make it? It just seems so hopeless. His father has the same problem. He is going to end up with nothing. He mentioned today that his friends and family have left. What is it going to take? He is great when sober, but when drinking he is so cruel and angry.

I am an alcoholic and was allowing my disease to destroy my life. I am now in AA and don't drink. He will have to hit his bottom, wherever that is, to ever make the decision to stop. You can help by finding an Alanon group and learn more about alcoholism. You can also contact aa also and someone will talk to him if he is willing.

Good luck.

The person probably had a parent that thought "a cold one" was an entitlement for a hard days work, also they probably work with and/or have a bunch of friends that have "beer-thirty" as I've heard it called. I've heard people say that the first thing AA has you do is loose the drinkin' buddies and get new (real) friends who aren't that way. Just have known people with this problem, tried to figure it out too....

I believe alcoholism is a disease. My boyfriend is an alcoholic and I can see it destroying his life. He was nearly dead 3 years ago from alcoholism and he admits he will die from drinking. He was in a coma for 30 days in a hospital from pancreatic necrosis and now has severe digestion issues and has to take insulin and just last nite I was sitting on his couch and heard a "glug"glug"glug" glug" He puts about 1 1/2 cups of vodka in a tall glass and guzzles it. He works full time and functions very well. One of these days it is all going to cave in on him.
He does not care. I refuse to drink with him. He will have to kill himself on his own and with the help of his kids who all cannot see this as a life threatening problem. They drink with him.
