It's not fair of Sara to tell you who you can and can't date. That's not how friends are supposed to treat their friends. Explain to Sara that you really like Chris, and you want to go out with him. Tell her you don't need her permission to do so, but that it would mean a lot to you if she understood how much you like him.
Sara has a point...things would be awkward after a breakup...but even so she has no right to tell you that you can't date Chris. But first, take a step back and examine the situation. How much do you value Sara's friendship? How much does Sara like Brandon, and vice versa? How much do you like Chris? Do you think you have a chance with him?
Make your decision after answering these questions. If Sara is your best friend in the world who you'd die for, and Chris is just a guy, then you know what to do. But if Sara has a habit of going behind your back and spreading rumours, and Chris is the sweetest and cutest boy you've ever met, you also have a pretty clear choice.
