If you need to soak your laundry before washing, 30mins to an hour is sufficient. Soaking too long may cause some of the colors to "run".

It will become smelly and possibly, depending on the conditions of the room, a little moldy. I wouldn't recommend it unless it's soaked in bleach or something.
