After dealing with difficult situations, what kind of self care do you use so that you don't start to hate your job and clients?

Journal. Better and cheaper than a therapist

Exercise. The harder the better, really helps you cope physically and emotionally with tough situations.

Stay away from alcohol and drugs, even over the counter ones. If you have trouble sleeping, stick with warm milk (it works, try it).

Get back to nature. Go camping or just a walk alone in a park.

Get a pet. Very healing and healthy to have a relationship with an adoring pet.

Control everything you can about your life and give it structure and routine.

Vacation, get away from it all.

And finally, what worked for me....QUIT. I took that crud for ten years, now kick myself wondering what on earth I was thinking. Have other job offers, without even trying, but still determined to make this vacation last at least three months.

Have slept better and had a better outlook than I did for at least the last five years of that misery. Saw it coming, saved my money like mad for the last year and a half, and don't have to worry about it, at least for a while.

When i had to deal with horrible customers when i worked in retail i would remember - 'hey, it's not my money' and I would try to make the customer as happy as i could and found it to be amusing to be super nice to nasty people so they would feel bad about being such jerks. Sometimes that would work. Also, after a stressful situation go on break and make a phone call or go to the restroom and freshen up your hair or makeup... Also, treat yourself on your lunch break - I would go to Panara Bread and get a gourmet salad and some good coffee. It was a treat and how I would relax.

If a customer is particularly annoying get help from a coworker and a manager... walk away for a few seconds to regroup.

When you go home from work take a relaxing bath, or go for a scenic 30 minute walk. Walking will clear your head of all those stress hormones and make you feel happy again. Also, try to listen to some happy music and dance when you get home or go outside and play fetch with you dog.

We have this professional back massager hand held machine - i also will ask my man to use it on my back for 5 minutes when i get home. Good luck hope something I said helps you.

I don't have that kind of job. But I like to remember that they are not my family and I don't have to be around them my whole life.
I like to do something nice for myself now and then. :) My dog is a big help. I love coffee. I like to stop and get a capachinno at the gas station across from my School. Plus prayer seems to help and good food. Talking with friends or family about other things or laughing about the stupid stuff helps too.

Please don't take it on your loved ones. They are not to blame for your problems at work.

If you come home stressed out I'd recommend take herbal Valerian root and lay down to take some nap. You will get up much better. Make sure it's 530 mg showing on the face of the bottle. Trust me it will work. Until you get used to Valerian don't drive a car. It WILL relax you. If I were you I'd invest in Valerian. It will save your life. I swear by it. LOL

You can e-mail me if you have questions.

That's why I left Social Work. I admire your determination and courage. I would say to make time for yourself without feeling guilty. Maybe you could go out to dinner or go for a picnic at the beach, on the way home, listen to music or maybe have a nice bubble bath with candles and a glass of wine. Make time for yourself and be with your family/friends.

Begin each day by telling yourself: Today I shall be meeting with interference, ingratitude, insolence, disloyalty, ill will, and selfishness -- all of them due to the offenders' ignorance of what is good or evil. But for my part I have long perceived the nature of good and its nobility, the nature of evil and its meanness, and also the nature of the culprit himself, who is my brother; therefore none of those things can injure me, for nobody can implicate me in what is degrading.
