Typically, the first interview is by phone. This enables them to speak to many people in one day, and weed out the obvious nimrods. The next step will probably be in person, but don't be surprised if a second manager interviews by phone so the two managers can compare notes and decide who and how many people to call in for the formal interviews.

It's very common to have phone interviews - and only if those are all good then to have a final real meeting.
However - in my current job I was hired with phone interviews only, not any real in person interview. But the reason was that the hiring manager knew me from the past and a lot of other employees in the company knew me as well.
In our case I would think a series of phone interviews to start with an then they will invite you for a real in person meeting.

Yes. Most companies these days do phone interviews mostly as their first interview or screening. This way they can evaluate whether you will be a good fit for the company before wasting the companies money and time to do a second onsite interview with their Human resource rep. Some companies do this as a form as second interview process, after the intial person to person interview. This is a way of verifying what was talked about in the first and checking to see if you are consistent in your responses. This happened to me when i applied for a job at a bank.

There is a company called NCIM (New Concepts in Marketing) who hire people to demonstrate products at Wal-Mart stores.
They have an on-line application, NO interviews what so ever, and they do their training on the Telephone!
By the way, anyone reading this, in desperate need of a job, can get one through them. They pay weekly, $8 an hour, +/-.

Hard to say, sometimes telephone interviews are done because they know what your skill level is as well as your work history based on your application/resume. If you have interviewed with them in the past, they may still have information on file as well. Phone interviews are not the norm where I work, but they do occur here and there.

Usually a phone interview is the first in a number of steps. It is often used to cull individuals before deciding if they are right for the next step, usually a face to face interview. It is unsual for someone to be hired based simply on the phone interview.

My nephew had a phone interview because the job was out of state and they planned to move him if they hired him, which they did.

phone interviews are actually pretty common, usually they're intererested enough in your resume to want to know more...but have so many applicants that they need to screen people out before the in-person interview.

Phone interviews are a good screening approach. If you flunk that you are gone. If you make a good impression they schedule a followup in person.
