because it's the basic fundamentals of any field that employs mathematics. Heck, you can't even use microsoft excel without knowing algebra.

petrel's got the best answer I've read so far. You are learning problem solving through Algebra, and how to reason your way through puzzling situations to find an answer. You're also learning one more advanced way to work with numbers. I can't say I liked it when I was in school, but now that I'm much older and have three university degrees, and have helped my kids through school, I'm damn glad I was taught Algebra. It wasn't easy, but nothing worth anything in life is easy. You'll see just how true that is later in life as you look back. Trust me on this one. God Bless you.

Maybe you wont need algebra later in life, but for right now, look at it this way. Your brain is like a muscle, algebra is like exercise for your brain. The more you do, the more developed your brain will be.

Part of the reasoning behind algebra is to teach you how to use your head for something except a place to hang your iPod.
There are frequent questions here which people could answer for themselves if they had stayed awake during algebra class, and they aren't from people looking for homework help.

No we don't have to learn Algebra in school. We can even learn it in the bus on way to school.

It helps you with problem solving abilities even though later problems may be nothing to do with algebra.
Logic and reasoning abilities are needed for many different things through out life.
However irrelevant you may think some school subjects are, they at least add to your knowledge base and the skills you need for life.

Because it teaches you to think in a logical manner. You could just skip it and flip hamburgers for a living the rest of your life.

partly cuz its useful, mostly so you can then learn trig and calc.
Its a good semi fair way of stratifying people and justifying huge differences in pay and therefore making it seem sort of fair.
