Oh they could go as princesses or rock stars, especially those in the late 70s and 80s with the wild coloured wigs and long dangly earrings.
Hippies, animals, what about making one of them a bunch of grapes or a bunch of cherries ( purple balloons or red ballones)? Pumpkins? Their favourite story book character?

I'm guessing they expressed desires for costumes that are not acceptable to you?
If they are close and sisterly with each other, you might consider costumes following a theme. There was a teenage girl working at one of the stores I stopped at on my route a few years ago, who, in response to her baby sister choosing a dragon costume, dressed as a dragon-slayer to take her trick-or-treating.

my daughters and i have a tradition of being witches. every year though we get different witch costumes. the point is to scare the spirits away, not to have them laugh at us in princess costumes. lol (but then again my 3yr old daughter is asking to be superman...yessss my daughter!) if she demands it then fine. it'll just be me and my oldest daughter who'll bewitch the nite!

That depends upon the region of the world in which you live...
Here in Texas, Butterflies and Fairies are common...
But I think that in Alaska... you'd better dress warmer than that!!! hahahahaahahaha!
