I agree with your basic assumption and I understand why people would believe that the government had a hand in the 9-11 attacks. People believe this because the government has engaged in a massive cover-up of it's incompetence in handling the events leading up to, during and after the attacks. It makes their actions look suspicious and inconsistent, hence the ensuing conspiracy theories. A more lucid argument can be made that the government caused the 9-11 attacks; in other words, US policy over the past 50 years in the middle east brought about the will and motivation to launch such an attack on the US. This is a stubborn fact that the US has undermined democracy and freedom globally but more significantly in the middle east because of the strategic control of the oil markets is at stake. Even if the US was energy independent, the policy would not change. Therefore the average Arab on the street knows that the local thug who is in power is in power for one reason only; the US put him there. If that thug is terrorizing the domestic population in order to maintain his illegitimate power, Arabs naturally and logically would blame the US fostering an environment that easily results in 9-11 and possibly worse. There is a simple solution to this, but there isn't a political leader in the US willing to do it.

Let's review it.

The government's theory is that 19 Arabs, who had been under surveillance, conspired together, walked onto four commercial aircraft without being detected, and without having their names appear on a passenger list. Then that they overcame over 250 people with plastic box-cutters. And not only that, but with no previous experience of flying large jets, they navigated from 30,000 feet and hit three out of four targets precisely, meantime conducting flying manoeuvres that fighter pilots would find difficult. Then, the amazing thing is that 7 of them survived the events and are known to be alive today.
Also for the first time ever in history, three, not two, but three steel framed buildings collapsed as a result of fire which could not possibly have burned hot enough to melt steel, and caused the buildings not to topple over, as one might expect, or to fall a little at a time, but to fall within their own footprint at the speed of gravity. And one of those buildings (WTC7) was not even hit by a plane.
Not only that, but the four aircraft disappeared completely without a trace of their 16 large engines, or any of the black boxes. This has also never before happened in history.


This theory is so amazingly full of holes that it is impossible for any sane thinking person to believe, yet that is what the official 9/11 commission report.says.

Because of one reporter who filmed, Ferenheit 9/11. And the way the president reacted when informed of the disaster, but to tell you the truth I was at work and had to interrupt my supervisor twice before it dawned on her what I was trying to convey, I watched it on internet CBS site. I was in shock and kept repeating to her that I didn't know if it was world war 3 because at the first plane had hit and I was walking in circles, then when the second one hit so soon after the whole world who was watching knew this was no pilot with heart attack or accident it was deliberate. So maybe President didn't quite believe or comprehend the magnitude of what was being said to him until much later but unfortunatly his first reaction had already been taped.

It really isn't the way anyone would have imagined a President would have reacted though, I know I jumped out of my chair, and had a very hard time continuing with my work, I am canadian and felt the assault as if it were happening here, I really think as North Americans as a family.

It depends on whether people think it was a conspiracy or some other legitimate sequence of US failure that led to the 911 attacks. As far as the conspiracy theory is concerned, there are people still believe the man landing on the moon is a fake. On the other hand, there are some very high placed politician honestly believe that through a serious of in-actions by several US presidents opened our country to be attacked.
