I'm in ninth grade and I'm a girl.

Is it true that most girls don't like math and science?

My dad says that I'm rare because I love math and science. (I want to be a doctor, in either psychology, anthropology, or neurology.)

Now, it seems like girls are told, that they are invincible...why is it rare, that girls like math and science?

Even more strange: Why do I need to wear make-up and look pretty? My dad told me because I am a girl, I should want to get rid of my acne, so I look better...Why do I need to look pretty can't I just play in the mud, collect worms, and look ugly?

Are these just steryotypes?

Woah...I think alot of people are getting the wrong impression of my dad.

He's the one who told me to persue science and math...(Those are also his favorite subjects...)

I just want to know why can girls be smart like boys...but still hold the same steryotype of looking pretty? (Don't get me wrong I like to look nice, every now and then...and I know the world is shallow...eh...whatever. I'm gonn go play with my rat...I don't care, anymore. )

omg...my avatar...woah...this is how weird I am...If my stuffed animal walrus (walpole) were a person he'd look like that. -.- Sorry...I'm just weird. (plus the girl avatars don't look like me.)

Holy Cheeze...a lot of people responded. Geez...I was just poking fun...no need to give me life lessons.

I just wanted to say 'Hey, makeup is icky...and math and science are kewl.'

Your avatar makes it look like you don't really like being a girl. Playing in the mud and digging up worms is not about being a boy or a girl....that is about being a little kid and I think you are fighting growing up.

Males and females are equal, but that does not mean we are the same. Women give birth, that is a given and our bodies have the hormones that make us feminine. Men are filled up with male hormones that make them act male - you know what I mean.

I don't believe it is true that girls do not like math and science. My daughter has a degree in science and she is very good at math as well. It is not a male/female thing, but a right /left brain thing.

You don't need to wear a makeup to look pretty, just smile a lot and be happy...but, acne does not look good on any face, male or female and if not treated will leave you scarred and that you don't want.

Whether a girl or tomboy or a boy, you want to look as if you care about yourself which means good hygiene, and clean clothing. People who have a self esteem and self confidence are more likely to be successful at whatever they try--and happier.

I loved the sciences and still do. I even liked math, as applied to the sciences...although I still don't like balancing my accounts. I DO it...but only because it's the grown up thing to do. (*gag*)

As for the pretty thing...you should take care of yourself. That means clearing up the acne, but if you don't want to wear makeup, don't. Personally, I think it feels like putting plaster repair (spackle) on your face, so not a makeup kinda person.

You can't be effective as a person if you don't take care of your health. That means clearing up your skin, exercise, a good diet, and a well rounded life. Go for whatever you want to be in life, and if that's playing in mud and collecting worms, then go for it. However, take care of yourself....not to the point where you're a princess, but where you're being healthy.

ok...i think your dad may be speaking on behalf of all women, and he might be wrong, although statistically women have been behind men in math and science, and as far as the looks thing, i think dads just want their daughters to be accepted and what's best for them, so he thinks it would make your life easier if you are the norm. he wants what's best for you. and maybe with the math comment, he's just saying in a manly way that he's proud of you for doing what (in some people's opinions, not my own!) most girls would find hard or boring.

Be who you are. Parents worry that their children will be "different" and that it is a reflection of them as parents. As a parent of grown children I know I made mistakes because parents aren't always right. One thing I do know - it's YOUR life. If you like math and science -go for it. Be that doctor. Excel in whatever you choose to do. Be true to yourself and proud of who you are.

Just be aware that the world is a cruel and shallow place and people are also judged on appearance. While you may not want to do anything about your acne, do something about it anyway. When it's time for you to get a job, appearances are everything!

I don't know. I wouldn't force you into being someone that you are not. But I do find it odd that in the ninth grade you are not trying to get into boys, and the fact that you chose a boy for your avatar.

your dad is really wrong for saying that. So what, if every girl just wanted to look pretty and didn't like math or science lets face it, men would probably be pretty close to ruling the world. i don't really like math but love science and biology.

once you are aware of those around you, you would want to emulate that which appeals to you. maybe your dad is just jumping the gun by saying that girls want these things. about the math and science stuff, it is not that numerous but if its there, hey, enjoy it.

i'm a girl and i'm in college to be a veterinarian - i love science. i'll tell you that there are a lot of women who are into science, especially in our generation compared to our parents'. you'll find that 90% of graduating classes at most veterinary schools are women. so you're definitely not in a minority, and you totally can do whatever you want to do!

and 2nd of all, when i went through my acne phase, i went to a doctor to get it cleared up medically b/c my mom told me that if i just let it be, it could cause scars on your face. and now i have friends who didn't take care of their acne and just let it die out on its own, and they have tiny little scars on their faces. i mean, even if i didn't care about looking pretty, i certainly wouldn't want scars on my face for the rest of my life.

hope this helps!
