Hey :) If I were you I would FIRST go thrift store shopping. You never know what you could find there! Or even check the newspaper classified ads for sale items even garage sale listings.

Your best bet is reinforced steel of some sort. A 55 gallon tank weighs, roughly, 440 lbs. Wood, unless it's designed right, will bow under that weight.
Try looking at www.craigslist.com for aquarium stands in the size you need. Also, check your local Goodwill, ARC, and Salvation Army---aquarium stands sometimes pop up there and are usually -very- cheap (compare to buying them new).
Good luck.

Simply find something sturdy enough and a 55 gallon tank can weigh up to 550 pounds, i would not advise you to put any water in it without first finding an appropriate stand of some sorts. and you don't want any part of the tank to be not supported by something cause that will cause the glass to break or cause the silicon to peel away from the surface causing leaks.

I'd go with a nice dresser as well. You can paint it whatever color suits and there is lots of storage. Make sure it is a real wooden dresser and not that particle board crap. As soon as that gets a bit wet it turns to sawdust and with the weight of a 55 gal I don't think it would hold up for too long. You could find a good one at a thrift shop or a used furniture store fairly cheap.

If you own your home, you can make a window in an inside wall, cost about $50 in wood trim to fancy it up. By doing this you can set your aquarium on the new ledge (which is as wide as the bottom flat piece of wood), and you can see it from two different rooms. You can see ours from both our living room and our den, it's awesome.

I would use cinder blocks for now and keep an eye on your local classifieds or craigslist for a usable dresser, coffee table, or aquarium stand.

I have heard of people taking out the innards of an old tv and putting the tank in there.
