Snakes move by moving their ribs. They can slide forward even while holding themselves perfectly straight. The edges of the belly scales give a little bit of traction. It is sort of how you would move if you stood in a burlap sack and stepped to your left. You would move your left foot to the left and your right foot would follow it. Then you'd move your left foot again and keep doing that. You wouldn't need your feet sticking out and you would definitely be moving. The burlap sack would hide your view of what was actually happening the way a snake's skin does but if you look carefully you can actually see the bottom of the snake getting realigned as it moves.

Snake suse their muscles to as an engery source for locomotion. It's how they move about.
Different snakes move in different ways, some curl around trees and bushes for life, in the air. Some like coral, and king snakes live most off their lives under roots, trash, dead trees, rocks, old foundations anywhere they can find a crack to live in,. They come out for food, or to mate. Some snakes like the side winder rattle snakes slide along in a sideways motion(utilizing it's muscles differently than it's cousins. As snakes curl part of their body froward it pulls the other half upward in a kind of circle and they just keep the motion going this way.
Although you woould not be sliding side to side you can lay your arm on a flat surface, and not taking it ofof the table extend your front muscles (near the wrist) outward and than flex ght rear muscles, afte ryou get the hang of it you can see that yoto can move your arm by muscle force, just not as fast as the snakes which have many muscles for locomotion.

Well, if they had legs they would walk. Just like everyone is saying. No legs, they crawl around on their belly.
