David Essex did the original and Soap Opera actor Michael Damien had a huge hit with a cover version in the late 80s.

Yes, it was David Essex and it was not supposed to get airplay. The DJ accidentally played the B side (Rock On) of the record. I don't know what the A side was. The rest is history.
