There's nothing wrong with religion. In fact, it gives many people a sense of hope and comfort.
What many people are hostile to is one particular majority religion trying to impose their religious and moral beliefs on everyone else as matter of law.
If people want to voluntarily practice their religion, and conform to a particular set of moral beliefs that they personally have chosen, that's all to the good. If it makes them happy, and doesn't cause them to harm others, then go for it.
But mandating religious ideology through law, and forcing everyone else to follow that moral code, is repugnant both to the concept of tolerance, and to the Constiutional values this country was founded upon.
Why can't people understand that freedom of choice and freedom of belief are not minority values, even if the majority happens to disagree with the minority's beliefs?

I am by no means hostile to any religious point of view. I am very open minded and think there is a lot to be learned from all people and all faiths. I have my faith. I believe in it and I keep to myself.
What I DO object to is having someone trying to ram THEIR beliefs down my throat while threatening me with eternal damnation for my beliefs. I am willing to listen, but I will not be strong-armed by anyone.

Yes, Jesus said the world will hate him and us because he testifies what the world does is evil and so do we. Thats why people have a blind irrational hatred for Bush and that is why day and night you can tune into yahoo and here hatred spewing from atheists and the like.
There is a mission right now by all atheists and liberals to secularize this country and its gonna get ugly!

They don't want to hear to the reason one chooses to do something is outside of them self or that there might be a power stronger than the individual. If there is a power stronger than the individual, then you might win over their argument.
The US is still the most religiously tolerant country on this planet.

because most religion is false religion and false ethics - pernicious, wrong, evil, sadistic, inhuman, destructive and mad
believing without reason is insanity - most religion is deliberate choice of insanity - deliberate abandoning of thinking sanely intelligently honestly sincerely
most religion is merely the egotism of: arent i good, arent i superior, arent you inferior
because most religion is contrary to the truth, to the teaching of the great spriritual teachers
because most religion is the product of worldly people in religious positions
jesus was opposed to the religion of his time, and condemned it
every religion falls out of spirituality which gives more abundant life, love, freedom, into phariseeism, into the letter that kills, into fear that kills love, into domination and avarice and robbery of the earnings of people and slavery of the minds of the people
the great spiritual teachers bring the truth, and people muck it up with their pride and powerseeking and mammonry and stupidity and passions
when a new great teacher comes, many hate him, because he tells them they are wrong - no great spiritual teacher yet has been able to say: you have got it right, you are still on the right track!
we are designed to get it wrong so that the teacher has something to do - look at the old testament, the new testament, look at the koran - story after story of how people got off the track, how they didnt listen and were lost, how some listened and were put back on the track, how a new teacher came and some listened and most didnt and some hated the teacher
some people suspect that they are immoral, and fear that the churches may be right - but if they knew, they would know the churches are far more wrong than many people are - they would understand the point of the saying: when morality is up, goodness is in decline [as at the salem trials, as in the burning of 'witches', of 'heretics', of anyone who disturbed the power of the church to enchain the people to their own pride and avarice and error]
to mindlessly adopt someone else's beliefs, to betray your own understanding, to abandon your own self, to leave your opinions behind as the church requires - there is nothing more wrong than this - it is spiritual suicide, selfdestruction of the soul - it makes pursuit of happiness impossible - how can you pursue your happiness without your brains? - and pursuit of your own happiness is the root of knowing love of self, love of others, and love of love - which are the two commandments of christianity, the soul of the bible, the soul of good sense, the heart of the good life
we are supposed to be true to ourselves, make mistakes and learn and grow - like a baby learning to walk, falling down, getting up - confident that no mistake is fatal - the church turns this around 180 degrees, to fear, and erosion of confidence of the existence of love
religion is a mishmash made of every error of people in the pursuit of happiness
at the same time, we are not just supposed to have our opinions like medals to enhance our egos - our opinions are supposed to be our hypotheses towards our grasp of reality, on which our happiness depends totally

I think that they are so hostile because it's want they need but their rejection it so strongly because they think that it makes them look weak or foolish. So it is said that Lucifer walks the earth and pollutes and confuses the mind. Those that Bark the loudest are those that need it the most. So I believe
