A kindergarten through eighth grade school has a really strict principal. During the protests for illegal immigrant rights, the principal told the students if they were absent from school because they participated in the protest, they would be suspended. Personally, I think that's wrong. It's up to the child's parents, not the principal. What do you think?

the children should have an appropriate reason to remain absent if not the principal has the right to question but definitely not to suspend
but at the same time he cannot oppose the parents for protesting against illegal immigrant rights as it would be anti democratic and a little xenophobic

I would think if the child stays home from school for the entire day of the protest, that is the parents call. If the child goes to school and then leaves to attend the protest, knowing full well the principals stance and repercussions, they've had fair warning and should accept the suspension.

I agree with the principal. There is no reason for children to attend such a rally. I think the only exceptions would be medical appointments, marriages, funerals, and the like. Not political rallys and protests.

Ask the principal for the written district policy that states he can do this. If it not written, he violated law and action can be taken against him.

WRONG!!! You are supposed to attend school to get an education. If you want to protest, do it on weekends, or after-hour school time. Part of what you are being taught in school is to learn to accomplish your job, then on your own time, you may do what you want, as long as it doesn't impede on anyone else's rights.

it depends.
kids cannot just be pulled out of school.
they need to be in school to learn.
for dr appoitments. funerals. etc...
they can leave.
but it is important for them to be in school.
