I'm guessing it's not in the system tray then? Assuming you are using Windows, go to the control panel, double click "sound and audio devices" and check "place volume icon in the taskbar"

you can now control your sound volume from there, have fun.

System volume information is a hidden file in the root directory in some versions of Windows. In order to see it you must show invisible files. After you locate it the operating system won't let you open it, because if you opened a file and changed one symbol it would screw up your computer requiring you to reinstall your operating system.
Don't mess with it.
