Other than going through my messenger service, how do I find good chatrooms with people of like interests?

I find that I am able to access various chatrooms through Yahoo Messenger, but most of the people in them are either complete buffoons or are obsessed with sex. Where and how can find chatrooms with high quality individuals who would like to talk about something of substance?
