My two month old has a temp. of 99.3. I was told when he was born though to bring him in if this temp. was 100 or more. But I am still worried. Should I be concerned or just keep a close eye?

I work for a pediatrician and I also have a two month old son. Anything under 100.4 rectally is normal. Once his temp goes past 100.4 you need to call your doctor asap. The most accurate way of taking a babies temp is rectally so make sure you have a good thermometer for that. I would not recommend Tylenol is a 2 month old because if he has something serious you do not want to mask his symptoms. You should consult your pediatrician and see how he feels about you giving Tylenol. Keep in mind that babies change very quickly and can go from being okay to being very sick in a matter of hours. You are the mommy though and you know your child best. If you are really concerned go to the ER. Sounds like your little guy will be just fine though.

This is perfectly normal. At 2 months old it doesn't need to be called in to the doctor until their temp reaches 101 or more. Make sure you take temp rectally and that they don't have too much clothes on (it is amazing how high their temp can get from being over heated) also make sure you are not taking temp when they first wake up (the blankets can make temp higher). If they have a low grade temp for more then 2 days I would call the doctor ((99.3-100.9) because this can be a sign of infection. Good luck taking care of our children is a hard stressful job it will get easier

How did you take his temp? The most accurate way for a child under 6 mos. is rectally. But 99.3 isn't really anything to worry about. If he runs a fever of 100 or higher for 3 days or more he needs to be seen. You can gice him tylenol based on how much he weights. Right now I would just watch him.

How are you taking his temperature? Rectally, orally, under the arm, in the ear? For young babies, none of these methods will yield 100% accurate results and can be off by as much as 2 or 3 degrees. Call the pediatrician. I would not take him to the emergency room or anything drastic like that if he's acting normal other than the fever but I would definately let his pediatrician know about it.

Does he have other symptoms, maybe he is just overdressed, young infants tend to run a higher temp then grown ups, which is 98.6 for normal adult body temperature,so you see your baby isn't running that high of a temp. Just keep a close watch, make sure there is no drafts of air if you are going to take a layer of clothes off, many babies like to sleep only in their diapers, not in winter though, but if you keep your house above 24 degrees he just may be too hot.

That is true, Once over 100 you should be concerned. Don't be so quick to take him to the ER. You've got to give him something for his temperature and watch him. You can also put him in his tub with luke warm water. Not cold, you don't want to try to decrease his temp. too fast. Leave him in the water until it cools down. If he keeps his temp. over 12 hrs. you might want to take him to the ER. Make sure he has no diareah or vomiting and if he is try to keep him hydrated. If he won't take it you need to get him looked at asap.

Generally, we like to see any baby under 6 months old with a fever.

Is he feeding okay? Wet diapers good? Sleeping ok? Is he happy or screaming? These are all things to ask yourself before you call the doctor - since they're hopefully going to ask you that too. If the answer to the first three questions is no, and to the fourth the screaming choice, call NOW. Otherwise, watch him thru the night and call them in the AM.

Keep a close eye, it's probably nothing, but keep a close eye, because my daughter had a fever of 99.3 when I took her to the doctor but overnight it went up to over 100. so just stay vigilant and do what the doctor tells you to do.

Keep a close eye at this point. 99.3 isn't all that high yet.

But obviously, as a mother of a newborn, it's whatever YOU'RE comfortable with. So if you're a little uncomfortable, it would be ok to call your pediatrician. That's what they're there for!

Good luck!

Keep him cool and keep a close eye on him. You can bring it down with a bath of tepid water. If he still has a temperature the next day, I would take him in to be seen by a doctor.
