Why not get all the rapists, murderers, child abusers, serial violent offenders and stick them all on an island together - they would have the oppurtunity to work the land to grow food - but they would get nothing given to them. In short they would actually have to work for a living.

And does anyone know what size island we'd need and which country owns it?

Maybe they can find redemption through hard work - and if they get a second chance on the streets they may do it again.

Sounds great if only you could be sure that you were not sending at least one innocent person there, too.

I suggest doubling the time for all prisoners and making it mandatory for them to learn a skill and be put to work to offset the cost of their keep. For example, they should learn to sew and have them make clothes for the poor in Africa or Indonesia. Teach them to make shoes for the poor. If they refuse to learn a trade, they must work for their food or be given the worse food in prison. When released from prison, they will have ten years with which they must stay clean and out of trouble, or be returned to prison to repeat the sentence or do the new one, whichever is longer.

If they become violent in prison, they should be sent to the island where the sharks are kept fed to some extent (to attract sharks and ensure they don't try to escape by swimming or building a raft). That is not inhumane; it is called segregating the criminal predators that cannot be rehabilitated from society.

It sounds like a good idea in the beginning - but if you really look at it - - - you are allowing them to live in a beautiful place and take a long vacation - on an island. It would be far greater punishment if you stuck them all in a dark cave somewhere and forced them to live as mole people where they could not enjoy the sunlight and fresh air - they would be given very small portions of food and water and no restroom facilities... let them deal with it like the evil snakes that they have become.

Good idea about the island, but what about dropping a WMD right in the middle and wiping every one of the filthy scumbags out . I`d pay money on pay-per-view too watch that

No it's not inhuman, but then on the other hand everybody makes mistakes, and am sure that both you and I had done something we wished we could change but can't.
All those people you mention deserved everything you said, but I believed in second chances and I believed that everyone should be given one.

Why an island. I want to go to one, and not have to do anything but just grow my own food. Sounds like paradise to me. Send them to antartica, make it a lot tougher. Leave the islands for those of us who are law abiding.

Like your first respondent stated, that was the idea behind Australia about two hundred years ago. Don't forget, that the man who recently spent three years in jail for a rape that he did not commit, would have gone there.

No, I have always thought that the "Escape from New York" idea was a great idea. Let them fend for themselves. I don't think it is very realistic in today's society but maybe someday in the future.

not a great idea, not exactly inhumane, but pointless. impractical, and stupid because one of the major reasons for punishing people is so they learn to not do it again, and your scheme doesn't allow for that, never mind all the logistical problems. and of course the vast majority of them DO work for a living anyways, that's how they buy food and pay the rent. how did you think they did it?
