I think all the manufacturers of clothing put this suggestion so as you cannot complain if you shrink your clothes in the dryer as you had the setting on high. Some items like towels can tolerate a high setting.

Dryers are set up to handle anything that you want to dry. Most people use the high heat setting when they have a full load of clothes so they get dried in a timely fashion. If you were only drying a few items the temperature settings are more critical and can cause problems if set too high. Most people use the time dry settings also even though the "automatic" settings are more economical and easier on the clothes.

I think it's there as a setting option to prevent/avoid shrinking, but it will eventually dry clothes! Smaller and lighter loads will dry the clothes faster than a normal to heavy load without heat. Jeans and heavier items you'd still probably want to use heat for, though. Have you tried drying your stuff on the lowest setting, but for less time?

High heat can be used for jeans and heavyweight coats and jackets. It can also be used for towels, because of their cotton content and some other items such as sheets and blankets. Most clothing will shrink if you dry it on very high heat. Have a good night!

I dry everything but knits and permanent press in the high setting. Just check the load occasionally to make sure it's not over heated.

I use high heat for everything - if it shrinks it was not worth having in the first place. Manufacturers should pre-shrink material before they sell the clothing.
