I discovered the genre, lol, and don't know that many authors or whatever.

I've only read Elizabeth Moon b/c it's set in space, about a tradeship and it involves adventure and no romance! <<< no romance is crucial for me, otherwise it seems to typical.

A lot of great science fiction was written in the 1950s. Some that you might like include a lot books by Isaac Asimov, especially one called "I, RObot" they made a movie called that but it doesnt have much to do withthe book. There is a whole series of books called "Dune" "Return to Dune" etc. Those are a lot of fun. THey have also been made into some pretty decent scifi movies.
A book which a lot of the kids in my son's scout troop were reading a few years ago was "Ender's Game" and then there is a sequel which is also great, called "Ender's Shadow" I would highly recommend those.
I notice someone else recommended Bartimeus - I think that's pretty good. Neal Stephenson is quite hard to read -- his books are not so easy for a high school student, but keep it in mind for later.... My kids liked the Redwall series, but I dont think those are exactly scifi... more like Harry Potter....

A book whichis a little hard to read, because the guy telling the story in the book speaks with a funny accent, is "THe Moon is a Harsh Mistress" - it is about whether a computer can be alive.

Have fun!!!!!

Any of the Star Trek Voyager books are wonderful reads if you like Star Trek.

Singularity ... something and Iron Sunrise by Charles Stross are pretty good if a little hard to get into at first.

Pretty much anything by C.J. Cherryh is good. Her Foreigner series especially as well as the Cyteen trilogy and Hellburner. Also her Morgaine Saga is great. Its my favorite.

Time and Again by Nora Roberts is pretty good because it involves time travel.

For the more fantasy side, I would recommend Tad Williams, Jacqueline Carey - The Sundering set is best to read first, then read the Kushiel's trilogy, I do recommend reading The Dead Zone by Stephen King. In my opinion its one of his best ones.

Seems like this question is being asked all over answers, I should develop a hotkey for my answer lol.
The white dragon by Anne McCaffrey.
Anne McCaffrey is now in her 90's and still writing. She collaborates with other authors and she also pens her own novels. The Pern dragonrider series is my favourite followed closely by her Crystal singer series followed closely by her Brain ship series. The ship who sang is the saddest story I have ever read in the sci fi genre followed closely by Moreta-Dragonlady of Pern.
She has a short passage at the beginning of all her books about herself. She is a very interesting lady well worth checking her home pages. http://www.annemccaffrey.net/books/index.html

Since I have been reading sci-fi/fantasy for over 50 years my best opinion on what you should do it go to Baen's Books on the web. Sign in as you would any site. From there you can check authors, titles, chat room, forum and the Bar, which actual authors actually attend. You will see the many different sci-fi/fantasy books that they have to offer and you can actually download and read free ebooks. Probably the best site anywhere for sci-fi/fantasy. Have fun!

I read fantasy more than science fiction, but I remember one author who wrote both types, a woman who's last name is "Cherryh". She has written a huge pile of books, some may be only available in used bookstores now. Some of the stories I remember are the "Cyteen" trilogy (about a woman who was cloned to do something, only the clone has other ideas...) "Downbelow Station", and "Merchanter's Luck". Have fun, there's a huge pile of books out there waiting for you!

Isaac Asimov is the king of sci-fi -purely cerebral, incredibly clever plots and no romance. Read the Foundation Trilogy - Foundation, Second Foundation and Foundation and Empire. I read them over 30 years ago and they still stick in my mind. He later wrote a load of sequels and prequels, but start with the main three.

I've got to go with the recommendations for the FOUNDATION Trilogy by Isaac Asimov. I went through all his books when I was younger, and have re-read them a number of times since.
He also has a a number of short story collections ~ PEBBLE IN THE SKY is the one that jumps to mind.
I, ROBOT is great; the dynamics of a human, who is uncomfortable at best with robots, working with an android is excellent. Great characters and story.

Have fun! ^.^

Magic Men by W. Korol Selley
Try the John Carter series by Edgar Rice Borroughs. Masterminds of Mars, A Princess of Mars, Synthetic Men of Mars, and Warlord of Mars are just a few from the series.
