Bottle of wine or flowers is always a nice gift for being invited to dinner. Your host should be happy that you were thoughtful to bring something other than yourself.

I believe that it is polite to bring a relatively small gift for the host/ess. Nothing big unless it is a special occaision like a birthday or something. I don't think it is absolutely required to bring a gift because they invited you.

Never ! surprizes are always romantic and you'd be surprized how many people there are that arent very romantic these days.
Flowers , candy , trinkets , to name a few.

A general show of appreciation or friendship is almost never inappropriate. Flowers, a bottle of wine, handmade items or foods, are all acceptable, and welcome.
