Hand washing is probably the single best way to prevent colds and coughs from spreading. Since kids are sometimes 'too busy' playing to stop and wash their hands frequently, have the hand sanitizer ready. A quick squirt and rub into one's hands cleans off bacteria.

Also- don't share cups, toothbrushes or eat off one another's plates.

When one child gets a cough or cold in your family,it may be a good idea to throw out the toothbrush he or she is using and buy an new one. Bacteria grow on toothbrushes like crazy!

If another child has a cough or cold, perhaps it would be a good idea to avoid playing with that child until the illness passes.I am referring to having friends over to play. It is probably too difficult to avoid playing with a child who has a cold or cough at school.

Ask if the teacher has hand sanitizer in his/her classroom. If not, donate a container along with some tissues. There are tissues now with anti-bacterial substances in them. I don't know if this helps or not, but it probably can't hurt.

Make sure your children get a lot of rest and vitamins, too.

They may still get coughs and colds, but maybe they won't last as long or be as lousy as before.

Good luck.

Diet and exercise. It sounds weird, but if you make sure they are properly dressed for the outdoors, and involve them in sports activities, they will build antibodies that will help reduce the incidence of coughs and colds, along with other illnesses.
When it comes to diet, make sure they are on the low end of the scale for things like cookies, candy, pastry, pizza, fries -- all the high carb stuff that doesn't have a lot of good nutrition, and fill in the gap with fresh fruits and veggies.
And tell them to wash their hands frequently during the day. Kids (and adults) put their hands to their mouths many times a day, outside of the regular habit of eating. And that's how germs travel. Washing hands is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of coughs and colds.

Drive them to school in the winter it is no good arriving wet and cold from waiting for a bus.

Also keep the house clean especially the food areas, get them into the habbit of washing their hands regualrly every time before meal, after the toilet etc.
Also keep them away from friends who have colds, as they will otherwise most certainly catch it.

If I know somebody near to me has a cold I will be extra careful not to put my hands near my ears nose or mouth without washing first... I have not had a cold in 2 years now.

Oh and by the way, antihbacterial gel wil not kill colds as this is a virus and not bacteria, but instead the process of washing hands in water physically removes the germs.

make them use baby wipes or the anti bactaria gel all the time. Wash there hands after and before eating or in contact with someone that has a cold or cough. Also, make sure that they always in public places like grocery shopping, or using the shopping cart always use a baby wipe to wipe there hands as alot of people do tend to cough, cover there mouth with there hands and of course handle the shopping cart bar. So the number 1. rule is to wash your hands, use baby wipes and anti bacteria gel all the time.

The common cold is caused by a VIRUS. Everytime you catch a particular virus, you become immune to it. This is why older people don't catch colds as easily as youngsters do. It is a normal progression of the immune system to contract & then overcome these viruses. If you protect yourself, & your kids too much from these "normal" viruses, you WILL end up with a compromised immune system; then you will be unable to fight off the really nasty "bugs" that are out there!

Don't smoke in the home or car, or anywhere in a closed up place around your kids. And, don't let anyone else either. I smoke, but not in the home, or in the car no matter how long the ride is.
I know some people will argue, but they say that kids who are in a non smoking home tend to spend less time sick and coughing.

Myself and my children do NONE of the above and have never suffered from a cold or flu in the last 10 years we have lived in this house because we have no central heating!
Central heating increases the warmth in the house so its perfect for breeding bacteria
My son was at a friends central heated house for a week last winter and come home coughing and sneezing
Turn your heat down or off!
Oh i just realised yes he did have a cold last year lol cos of the above!

I agree with Harry, don't wrap them in cotton wool! Obviously keep your kids and your house clean but we all need some germs to help build up our immune system.
Loads of exercise and a good healthy diet should keep them well and avoid you having to give any supplements.
