No of course not all poker sites are the same. If they were, there wouldn't be so many. Some are more social than others - players enjoying the chats whilst they play, others more serious with leagues and so on. You want some recommendations yet it's difficult as I don't know what type of games you like/enjoy and what you most like about the site you currently use but here's a few of my favourites. They all have freerolls as well as cash games. Enjoy! :)
And no, I don't think they are fixed - far from it. They are totally random. They have to be under the gaming laws.

The biggest differance is player points also known as player comps. This is simply what players are rewarded as they play with real money. The site below has a good review section for a better explanation.
