Focus on the understanding. Learn to understand how things works, conceptually. This is the most important thing.

That and focus on your mathematics skills, and take difficult math/physics classes. Physics is two languages. It is one thing to understand physics and conceptually engage with it; however, there is also a mathematical side to physics.

Practising loads of problems only gets you good grades. It doesn't make you a good physicist or a brilliant thinker.

My AP Physics teacher told my class that she got really good at physics by doing her homework problems over and over again, changing values around each time. She had so much practice that she's really amazing at it. It worked for me too. I got a 5 on the AP test.
