1. The mean is the same as the average. Add up all the numbers and divide by how many numbers there are. For example, four 0's, plus two 1's, plus two 2's, plus one 3 = 9 There are 9 numbers in that list so divide 9 by 9 = 1. So 1 is the average or mean.

The median is the value in the list that is in the middle when you arange all the numbers in order. For the first list of numbers, there are four zeroes, a one, and then four more numbers. There are 9 items in the list (an odd number), so you just pick the one in the middle, 1. When there are an even number of items in the list, there's no single number in the middle, so you are supposed to take the average of the middle two numbers. Like in the second list of numbers you average 84 and 90 together to get 87 as the median.

The mode is the number in the list that occurs most often. In the first list, the mode is 0.
In the second list there is no mode. If there is more than one number that occurs most frequently, then there is more than one mode.

for 5A, hmmn let's see how could each data set have a meaning of 8. They just had us do mean, median, and mode problems, so maybe it's one of those...

For 6, write out the data like this:
1, 3, 3,3, 4, 4, 4, 5 and do the same solving as in the first set of problems

For 7, try arranging the items in order first, 15,16,19,20,23,60, to get a better look at them. Because 60 is so much larger than the rest of the numbers, the mean or average will be higher than 5 of the 6 values. There is no mode. So the median will be best. You can calculate the mean and the median to compare them to prove the point.

For the different kinds of things like allowance, test scores, etc. there could be more than one right answer. But the important thing is to explain why you think it should be one of them more than the other. For allowance, the $ amount you get over time is probably what's most important, so even if you get a much higher allowance some weeks than other, you'd want to figure that in, so I would think a mean or average would be best for allowance. For favorite cereal, I wouldn't even know how to figure a mean or median, unless you assign a numeral value to each cereal or something. It's the cereal you choose most often, which could be called the mode. Hours in each school day, would be probably for a typical school day, not including half days etc., so you could use the mode for that also. Spelling test scores, it depends, maybe mean, maybe median, depending what you cared about more, your grade would depend on the average or mean. New car cost might be median, since you might want to know how much you'd spend if your car cost more than half the others and less than the rest.

For the last question, arrange the scores in order again, since you will have to find a median, 78,83,83,89,92... You will take one more test, so there will be 6 scores all together. For the mean to be 87, the total of all 6 has to be 87x6=522 Subtract the 5 scores you have already from 522 to find what you would need to get a mean of 87.

For the median to be 85, let's see... the 83 and 89 are almost in the middle. Picking right between the two of them would give you a middle value (median) of 86. So it wouldn't work to just get a score of 89 or higher. To make the median 85, one of your middle scores would have to be 83 and the other.... 87 ------- ta-da!

You don't seriously expect people here to do all those homework problems for you, do you??? You should at least show that you are trying ... do you not know what mean, median and mode is? Perhaps that's where you need help, and then you'd be able to do all these problems and many more all on your own!

MEAN = what most people call "average" --- add up all the sums of your N number of items, then divide the total by N to get the mean

MEDIAN is another type of average --- look at your set of numbers and divide them into 2 halves, a lower half and an upper half. The median is the value at which precisely half of your set falls below it and half your set falls above it.

MODE is another type of average --- look at your set of numbers and observe which value occurs most often. That is the mode.

Here's an example -- learn from this then apply this to your own homework problems!

Consider the set of numbers 1, 10, 11, 80, 80

The MEAN is (1 + 10 + 11 + 80 + 80) / 5 = 36.4

The MEDIAN is 11, because half your values (1, 10) are below 11, and half your values (80, 80) are aove 11.

The MODE is 80 --- 80 occurs twice in the list, all the other numbers occur only once.

Hope this helps!

It sounds like you are having trouble understanding the mathematical concept, or that you just really didn't want to do your homework.

To find the mean of a data set, you add all the numbers and then divide by the number of numbers in the data set.

To find the median of a data set, put all the numbers in the set in numerical order. Then just find the number in the middle. If there are two numbers in the middle, then just find the mean of those two numbers.

To find the mode of a data set, just look for repeating numbers.

Ex: 1,1,1,1,2
The mode of this data set would be 1.

If there are no repeating numbers in the data set, simple put "no mode" as your answer. DO NOT PUT "0"! Because this implies that zero is the mode.

Ex: 1,2,3,4,5
mode = no mode

Ex: 0,0,0,8,4
mode = 0

I hope that helped. If you are having that much trouble understanding your math homework, you should stay after class one day and talk about it with your teacher. It is okay to ask questions during class, like "I don't understand how to find the mean, median, and mode of a data set. Would you please do an example?"

OK i would answer these questions on a normal basis cause that's where i am now but... that would be cheating. what i can tell you is what median and mode are. Mode- add all #'s together and divide by the number of numbers there. Median- the middle number

it depends. when i was in 7th grade, some kids were advanced and were doing algebra 1, and some were doing prealgebra like me. im now 17 and going into precalc. everyone is always worried about math because we think its going to be super hard. but, when the teacher teaches it, it wont seem so hard because u will be learning it little by little, not all at once. good luck!

Do ur own homework. I have homework and u don't see me ordering ppl to do my homework. Your not gonna learn anything, and on Monday if theres a POP QUIZ you'll be "WUH ?" come on this stuff isn't that hard, unless ur dumb and can't do it yourself so u have to ask America to do ur homework, so would u want me to tell your teacher that u don't wanna do ur homework or will u do that ???
