Yes, but unfortunately less popular than it use to be 20 years ago. The big rink in our area in NW Illinois, U.S.A. is located in the country 9 miles from about four towns. It has been there for approximately 50 yrs. or more. When I was young (Im 64) it was the most popular place for the kids to hang out. There were times set for young children, adults, and family to skate. Everyone became friends and enjoyed other activities together as well (picnics, ball games, birthday parties, movies, going out together to eat). It was a safe place to have good clean fun. There were special skates like the moonlight couple, all skate, trio, The Grand March, advance skate where one person in a couple skate moves forward (when the whistle blows) to a new partner - which helped people get acquainted, and dance skates (which required patterned footwork and skill) such as waltz, foxtrot, barndance, and the two-step combination. When my children started skating (I started taking them when they were 2) and wanted to go regularly (at 10 up) I had to drive them and they would ask me to stay and skate with them. Yes, especially when they were teens. Hard to believe but, they would say, " Come on, Mom, there are people out here your age that want you to come out." I am still very close friends with many of the people I skated with, most of them my children's age. They are the people who have stuck with me through thick and thin. I wish you had a rink close to you and could establish good friendships like my children and myself have been fortunate enough to have done. Rollerskating has been a very big part of my life and I wish it could become a big part of yours. Don't let the lack of a rink stop you. Skate on the side walk, try to encourage friends to skate, post a notice on a grocery store bulletin board - there might be others just like you. Check to see if a school or some other institution in your area might let you skate in their building or garage. A boom-box is good enough for music. I don't know how old you are but maybe you could get a group interested and travel to the closest rink if it is feasible (parents could always drive). Don't give up!!! Good luck!!! Let me know if you have any success.
