I find it amusing that people who have lots of money often say that money isn't important. Money isn't going to make you happy etc. Easy to say when you have lots of it. Easy to say when you don't have to worry about where the next paycheck is going to come from or how you're going to pay the next bill. I don't know who said it, but this quote stays with me:"I've been rich and I've been poor. Rich is better". What do you think?

Money can't buy happiness, but how happy can a person be if they have no home and no food? I know what you mean. I was listening to the district manager talking to a group of us regular workers at a restaurant. He was telling us how smart people who want to be financially secure will invest in the stock market. I wondered seriously if he remembered what he paid us. I'd like to see him live on it and do some investing. People with money have no clue and don't want one either.

Because their problems have changed to things that are harder to fix.
Relationships, emotional problems, drug/alcohol/mental problems get all the attention.
Once you have access to anything you want you're more likely to become mentally unstable or create dramas or have access to dangerous things. Also you're probably more likely to try dodgy things to get thrills (because you have access to anything) and normal everyday life things are easy. Like working to pay rent for example- don't need to.
The problems that poor or non-rich people have mostly centre around survival. They obviously have the relationship/emotional problems too, but those have to take a back-seat. Either that or they are played out together which makes life harder.
Rich people are used to everything they have and take it for granted. Money can't buy happiness unless you are happy just being alive and having material things. That's one of the reasons poor people say they are happy even though they have no money. They are just happy to be alive. Also their relationships tend to be better because they have less complications.
Unfortunately most people think that material things = happiness. People are somehow surprised to find out this isn't the case.
In general rich people have less (real) problems. It's just that they're more dramatic and have less ability to handle life's problems from all the mollycoddling.

You actually answered the question you asked yourself. However my point of view is better be rich and sad rather than poor and miserable. After all money does buy practical freedoms of all kinds. Why would anyone want to be poor and worrying where to sleep, eat etc. the next day. No one in his right mind I believe.

Yes, having money can make paying the bills easier but what you have on the inside brings something that money just can't buy.
Not all lottery winners find happiness, some have more problems after they get a windfall of cash.
Like anything in life it's what you do with your time and money... it's all how you spend it!

I don't doubt for a moment that being rich is better than being poor, though I'm sure I'll never really know.
But true happiness can not be bought.
I know because I can't afford to buy hardly anything and I'm happy.

Money sure cannot buy happiness but it sure can cause you to be happy. I rather be rich any-day. Anyone would choose poor over rich is out of control.

The reason rich people say money doesn't buy happiness is because they know that if they spend all their money on happiness they won't have any left and then they won't be rich any more and that sucks!

Because having money does not guarantee you a happy life. Look at all the famous celebrities out there - how many of them do you think are truly happy? My ex boss has money - can buy most anything he wants, and he is one of the most miserable people I know.

If a rich person whinges that money doesnt buy them happiness tell them to give you all their money. I'm willing to take on that terrible burden of living in luxury.
