There's a number of things it could be. Nobody has mentioned "separated shoulder" (note this is not the same as a dislocated shoulder), so I might as well mention it. Its a common injury. But the treatment for it is probably the same for any other sprain, assuming it's minor.

Ice for the first 48 hours, and rest the shoulder. Do not keep ice on for more than 15-20 minutes at a time. Take some anti-inflammatories. After 48 hours, heat will do better. If it still hurts by Friday ( Sept 22), it would probably be advisable not to play in the game, and you probably want to see a sports doctor at least to get some estimate of how long you may be out. It is important to let things heal, and you don't want to re-injure it while its not up to snuff.

I am an MRI tech so I see a lot of people with the same problem that you are having. I hate to say it but it sounds like you may have a torn rotator cuff. The fact that you have difficulty raising your arm may indicate that you have damaged your supraspinatous muscle which is one of the three muscles that makes up the rotator cuff. I would ask your physcician for an order for an MRI of the shoulder and not play sports or over work that arm until you find out. You can certainly damage it further. Good luck. Oh, ice it instead of heating it. Heat dilates your blood vessels and sends white cells to the area of inflammation and just makes it worse. Good luck!

I am not completely certain, however the pain and discomfort you are describing sounds exactly similar to some problems I once had with my shoulder. It was described to me by my doctor as bursitis, which is very similar to tendinitis in the elbow. It is also very uncomfortable and painful. Eventually I had to go to physical therapy to lessen the degree of pain and increase my ability to move the arm to shoulder height. If you decide to go to P.T. be sure to follow the exercise regiment suggested or it will return with a vengeance....I learned the hard way.

May be b cause you carried heavy burden or you may have hurt your self somewhere. lift your shoulders and return them to their normal position. OR even you can try holding a shoulder with your other hand and take your hand-held shoulder slowly behind.
Do this process 10 - 12 times. It will pain but your pain will be cured. ok then best of luck

\Sounds like you pulled some muscles. It takes a while for these muscles to heal. try a heating pack and alternate with cold packs. Hope this helps. Good Luck. I don't know about playing football again so soon. That's up to you.
