Yes it is parallel to the Vietnam War. In both wars, America believed they would be widely accepted for their intervention. In reality, it is not the extremist, but the patriots in Iraq that are against the US. The same exact thing happened in Vietnam. Do not get me wrong, there are still many who favor the Americans being there. In Iraq you have a religious war going on. In Vietnam you had a North vs South war going on. Another parallel instance of similarity.
To put the situation in perspective think about the Iraqis coming into your city and blowing up everything (even accidently firing a missle into a hospital and school thinking it was a terrorist ran building). The Iraqis have every right to be upset about having Americans in power. Those on Iraq's seat of government are only on there for power. In choosing them to be rich and powerful, President Bush will financially profit from it. In a few years I believe political corruption will show. It may turn into another Cuba-like incident.
Another distant similarity is political stunt. In Vietnam and Korea, America was trying to contain Communism, while the other superpower Russia was trying to spread it. In Iraq, Bush profits personally. The money may or may not be used to fund the Republican party, afterall there is no George Bush III.

If your compare and contrast the rationale for going to both wars, the public sentiment, international opinion, casualties etc, then I would say YES. WE went to Viet Nam to protect and spread democracy (like in Iraq), we went there under the banner of stopping something 'evil' (communism in vietnam, terrorism and WMD in iraq), public opinion was strong at the begin but gradually declined to unpopular levels, we operated in a sort of 'coalition-of-the-willing' scenario, not a UN-approved mission, warfare and combat casualties are not caused by conventional enemies but guerilla-type battles, in both wars, presidents and government officials are seen as 'detached from reality' by the public. Defense officials who planned the wars later headed to lead the World Bank; McNamara during Vietnam and Wolfovitz during Iraq. Outside countries supplied the enemy with weapons, USSR before and now Iran and Syria (only speculations yet) Theres alot of similarities actually. The good thing though is we have the lessons of Vietnam to guide us if we will let Iraq become our vietnam 2.

Oh, yes, most definitely!
But - only if you're a die-hard anti-war person looking desperately for ways of characterizing the war in Iraq that will influence people too intellectually-lazy to see for themselves that there are few meaningful parallels to the Vietnam War and none of a substantive nature as it relates to the present circumstances and where we go from here in Iraq.

The press & Dems are trying to make it so. We cut and run we will have another equivalent to Cambodia's killing fields.
If the locals really wanted the coalition out they'd see to it there was peace soon for at least 1 year. The coalition would break up and go home. Then if they didn't think they were better off they could have their civil war. That is operating from a position of self control & power.

No, we were fighting Communism in Vietnam, not to get oil for private companies!
It is similar in some ways, and worse in others!
The troops now are just being used for target practice!
We illegally attacked a sovereign nation in Iraq, where the North Vietnamese attacked So. Vietnam!
However, both were started by presidents lying!
In both, the military are being killed for politics and nothing to do with our freedom! Actually, our freedoms are being taken away!!

I lived then and I would say yes, but there is no draft, yet. There is not the loud vocal protest going on in all the major city's and on campus. As far as the war itself it is an effort in futility. No win, no win situation.

Yes it does appear like a conflict that we cannot win. Luckily, so far, the American death toll has not been as large. There are not enough troops there to make any real headway.
